Tadoussac is literally the doorstep to the region, neighbouring the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean and the Charlevoix regions. With its 400 years of history, it is the birthplace of New-France, and this is where the very first fur trading post in Canada was erected.
This small town promises a warm welcome, and the tourist infrastructure is highly diversified. Take the time to visit the Centre d’interprétation des mammifères marins (CIMM), a must-see attraction on the Whale Route! Here, you will find movies, games, interpretation activities and an imposing collection of skeletons, which is unique in North America. Specialists are also available to answer your questions, and all the profits from the purchases made at the gift shop support the research on marine mammals.
Visit also the Petite Chapelle de Tadoussac, also called chapelle des Indiens. It is the oldest wooden church still existing in Canada and it houses many religious objects. The Poste de traite Chauvin is also worth a stop. A replica of the first trading post built in 1600 by Pierre de Chauvin, this building will make you discover the history of fur trading in Canada through various theme exhibitions.
Among all the attractions in Tadoussac, don’t miss the Saguenay—St. Lawrence Marine Park. This park assures the protection and exploitation of the splendid Saguenay Fjord and a part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Take the Réseau découverte of the park and visit the protected territories, the trails, the islands and the interpretation centres. It is also possible to observe the marine wildlife from the shore, go hiking, scuba diving or sea kayaking.
Then visit the parc national du Saguenay – Tadoussace sector. There you will find a permanent exhibition and will learn more about the geological phenomenon of sand dunes. Nearly 2 kilometres of pedestrian paths give access to the Colline à l’Anse à l’Eau and the Pointe de l’Islet where you will have a beautiful view on Tadoussac. The site also houses 3 shelters and 2 campgrounds. From September to October, the observatoire d’oiseaux de Tadoussac organizes activities of birds of prey watching.
