A Region Larger than Life

The Manicouagan region stretches along the coasts of the St. Lawrence River. Here you are in the world’s largest estuary: the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Enjoy the beautiful Quebec’s marine landscapes along the Whales Road or let yourself be dazzled by the powerful rivers and the giant hydroelectric power stations.

The Manicouagan region displays 300 kilometres of shores along the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River. Numerous bays, coves and beaches dot this shore and allow visitors to swim, go on a sea kayak excursion or on a whale-watching cruise. The region’s omnipresent and dense nature also allows visitors to tak part in numerous outdoor sports. In summer, go on a bicycle ride or on a hike, initiate yourself to diving and observe the whales from the shore or directly on the river aboard an inflatable dinghy or a kayak. In winter, put on your cross-country skis or snowshoes to cross the most beautiful paths. You can also go on a dogsledding excursion, initiate yourself to ice fishing or spend the night in an igloo. More than 2,000 kilometres of paths await snowmobiling enthusiasts in the region!

The Manicouagan region’s hinterland conceals real natural and artificial treasures. The powerful rivers surrounded by a breathtaking landscape provide enough energy to feed the Manic power stations. From the Manicouagan reservoir that lies in the large Manicouagan crater, runs the river that feeds the largest multiple-arch-and-buttress dam in the world, Manic-5. The Manic-2 power station, which is located only a few kilometres from Baie-Comeau, is as impressive.

To the north of the region, the Trans-Québec – Labrador Highway allows visitors to climb to the summit of mounts Groulx, many of which are higher than 1,000 metres. It is the northernmost highway in eastern North America, and it also crosses the region of Duplessis to Fermont in Labrador.

Finally, during your stay in the Manicouagan region, you can take advantage of a relaxing night in the different accommodation establishments. The resorts offer you lodging, combined with outdoor activities that will give you the chance to discover the wealth of the region. Numerous tourist homes, youth hostels and bed & breakfasts welcome you in their warm atmosphere, while the hotels and motels located in large cities allow you to spend a luxurious stay. Campgrounds, for their part, allow you to really enjoy all the spectacular landscapes of the region.
